Bukewa Health Centre III in Manafwa District has been abandoned by health workers following the destruction of the Bukewa-Bwagogo bridge connecting to the facility.   

The bridge that connects to Bukewa Sub County were washed away by the floods on Tuesday. 

 The facility serves the sub-counties of Bukewa, Bwagogo, Kaato, Buweswa in Manafwa district and Bukabusi Sub County in Namisindwa district.

 Melda Mwasame, a clinical officer says that currently, there is only a guard at the facility and a traditional birth attendant who is attending to pregnant mothers.

 James Wafula, the in-charge Bukewa health centre III, said that he was supposed to treat HIV patients but unfortunately he could not due to the broken bridge.

 Mafabi Francis, a resident of Bwagogo said that Bukewa Health Center is the only facility that serves all people from the neighbouring sub-counties but now they are can’t get the services.

 Godfrey Siganji, the chairperson Busesyiyi village in Bukewa sub-county wants the authorities to come to their rescue and work on the bridge because it has put services at a standstill.

Harriet Nadudu, the Manafwa district Speaker said that the lives of people in Bukewa have been left at the mercy of God. 

Dr Gideon Wamasebu, the District Health Officer says that medical workers are willing to work but can’t access the facility.  

“The health workers are willing to work but where can they pass, they also fear for their lives,” he said.
