Hima LC III Aspirant Withdraws from Primaries Citing Intimidation

John Businge Mugenyi, an aspirant for the Hima Town Council LC III chairperson National Resistance Movement- NRM party ticket has withdrawn from the primaries citing intimidation.  

Mugenyi has been contesting against the incumbent Hima Town Council LCIII Chairperson, John Katura Musana and Tom Maate Wabukombi.  He, however, announced his withdrawal from the race on Tuesday evening a few hours to the polls.

According to Mugenyi, he decided to withdraw from the race because of the increased intimidation and harassment of his supporters by security personnel and his agent’s opponents. He also accuses his opponents of ferrying voters from as far as Kitagwenda and Kamwenge districts to participate in today’s primaries.

Mugenyi also decried the tribal sentiments that have marred their campaigns. He revealed that to avoid violence chaos, he has chosen to discourage his supporters from participating in the exercise.

Bernadette Nabukenya, the Kasese District NRM Party Registrar, said she was yet to receive an official letter from Mugenyi communicating his withdraw from the race. In 2016, the LCIII post-election violence in Hima Town council claimed that lives of more than seven people in Buhuhira and Kikongo villages.
