The Anti-Corruption Court has remanded Amina Mutesi, the Jinja Principal Education Officer, to Luzira prison on charges of abuse of office. Mutesi, who was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, joins two other government education officials, Haruna Mulopa and Samuel Ngobi, who have been in custody since August 21, 2024, on similar charges.

The trio is accused of diverting Universal Primary Education (UPE) funds for unauthorized activities, including a sports workshop and Jinja City Council events, which contravenes UPE guidelines for managing public funds. According to the prosecution, on May 24, 2024, the three officials allegedly directed head teachers to use UPE capitation grants for unauthorized Term Two activities, violating the established UPE regulations.

Grade One Magistrate Christopher Opit granted bail of 3 million shillings each to Mulopa and Ngobi on Wednesday, with the case adjourned to December 6, 2024. However, Mutesi was remanded to Luzira prison until September 5, 2024, to allow the prosecution time to verify her bail documents before considering her bail application. Mutesi denied the charges, and Senior State Attorney Raymond Mugisa informed the court that investigations are still ongoing.
