Morocco to Host 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has today confirmed Morocco will host the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Africa’s football body made the announcement this afternoon after the Executive Committee held today in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The meeting chaired by the Acting CAF President Constant Omari was also attended by the President of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, who is a special guest at the Total African Nations Championship which starts on Saturday.

“Morocco has been designated host of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” said the CAF communication after the meeting.

Last year CAF cancelled the 2020 Africa Women's Cup of Nations that was slated to take place in November and also approved the creation of the first-ever African Women's Champions League to start this year.

This means the continental women's showpiece was last staged in Ghana in 2018.

The CAF Executive Committee also decided to grant amnesty to all teams that withdrew from CAF competitions effective March 2020 till date because of the challenges of COVID-19. Several teams withdrew from competitions because of the influence of the virus.

“Modification of the minimum number of players allowed to start a match due to COVID-19 in order to allow teams to play with less than 15 players during this period. If a team has 11 players to play a game, the match will go on. In case there is no goalkeeper, another player can replace the goalkeeper on condition that the total number of players on the pitch is 11,” stated CAF.
