The Bombers Captain Shadir Musa Bwogi has started off well in his 2022 commonwealth journey punching his way into the quarter finals of the middleweight category after his triumphant victory over Aron Sewaru.

Bwogi entered the ring in the blue corner at Lugogo sports complex on Tuesday morning where he eased past Sewaru with a Knockout in the first round. He looked sharp from the first minute hitting the opponent with several punches forcing him on the ground, which prompted the referee to stop the fight.

After the bout, Bwogi told URN that the win is an addition to his career as he looks forward to representing the country in commonwealth games.

Still, at the same mini boxing tournament organized by Uganda Boxing Federation-UBF, the all African Silver medallist, David Ssemujju also punched past his opponent Owino John in the light middleweight category to storm quarter-finals.   Ssemujju won the fight by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Semujju who also participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games looked fresh cutting punches with an offensive force. After his fight, the pugilist told Uganda Radio Network- URN that he wanted to correct some of the mistakes that made him lose in the Olympic games.

Both Bwogi and Ssemujju were part of Uganda’s boxing delegation that participated in the Olympic games. Uganda took a team of three boxers with last the being Catherine Nanziri who participated in the flyweight category.

The national team trials present a great platform for Uganda’s pugilists who have spent a lot of time without any active competition, which explains Uganda's poor performance in the games, according to the Federation President, Moses Muhangi.

Before going for the Olympic Games, the three had not stepped in a ring to compete for almost two years. Prior to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, boxing was Uganda’s most successful sporting discipline at Olympic Games. Uganda has three silver and one bronze medal.
