Rotary International President Flags off Construction of Cancer Bunkers

The President of Rotary International, Shekhar Mehta has flagged off the Shillings 1 billion construction of the linear accelerator bunker at Nsambya hospital. The construction of the two linear accelerator bunkers is going to take place behind the Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya hospital, which was commissioned in 2017.    

According to Stephen Mwanje, the Past District Governor, the construction is to start this month and run until September 2023. He says that after the construction works, Rotary will equip the facility with the necessary equipment to establish a fully-fledged Cancer treatment center in Nsambya.

In his speech, Shekhar said that nothing gives him great pleasure than visiting projects like the Cancer Centre at Nsambya hospital. “Very meaningful work, this is Rotary at its best. Caring for people who do not have means for best of facilities,” he said.  

He said that facilities such as the cancer treatment center are a big service to the community since they are meant for both the rich and poor. Shekhar commended Nsambya Hospital for partnering with Rotary to help in the treatment of cancer and prayed that the construction of the linear bunkers is completed soon.

Shekhar committed to providing all the necessary support towards Uganda’s fight against cancer, noting that the disease remains rampant even in the face of COVID-19.

Dr. Peter Ssekweyama, the Nsambya Hospital Executive Director said that with support from rotary, they have been able to train staff onsite under the Rotary Center while others have been able to travel to the United States –US, Kenya and India to get an insight in the management of different cancers.

Ssekweyama said that the new project with rotary is going to see the procurement of two linear accelerators and the training and recruitment of staff to work in the new building. He said that what is lacking at the hospital currently is chemotherapy. 

He, however, said that once the bunker centre is complete, they shall then have holistic care for cancer patients across the country.
