Uganda Stops Rwanda to Finish 5th in African Volleyball Championship

Uganda’s impressive journey at the 2021 Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship had earlier ended after a loss to Egypt on Saturday. The debuting Volleyball Cranes lost 3-1 to eight-time champions Egypt at the Kigali Arena to bow out of the tournament.

The Volleyball Cranes have defeated hosts Rwanda 3-1 in the playoff of the African Nations Volleyball Champions at Kigali Arena in Rwanda to command a respectable 5th position. The Volleyball Cranes had a poor start in the game where they lost the first set to Rwanda 25-21. 

However, the Volleyball Cranes gained momentum in the middle of the game and won the rest of the sets. Uganda won the second set 25-23, the third 25-20, and the last set 25-13. This helped Uganda to command a respectable fifth position at the ongoing continental showpiece.

The two teams faced off in the group stage where they battled for the group’s top position but Uganda fell to Rwanda. Uganda’s impressive journey at the 2021 Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship had earlier ended after a loss to Egypt on Saturday. The debuting Volleyball Cranes lost 3-1 to eight-time champions Egypt at the Kigali Arena to bow out of the tournament. 

According to the tournament’s format, Uganda, therefore, had to resort to classification (playoff) games where they beat team DR Congo 3-1 on Monday as the fight for 5-8th places began. The win allowed Uganda to battle Rwanda.

This was Uganda’s maiden appearance at the continental championship. Uganda had a good start in the group winning her first two games against Burkina Faso and Burundi respectively before falling to Rwanda in the last group game.  

The tournament attracted sixteen countries including Rwanda, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, South Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia Kenya and Senegal among others.  Although Uganda is making their maiden appearance at the continental showpiece, a fifth position presents a good future for the Volleyball Cranes.
