Alphamin Resources Corporation, the Canadian company known for carrying out tin mining in Bisiye, Walikale territory in North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has announced the suspension of its operations due to the advance of the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels in the area.

In a statement released Friday, Maritz Smith, the company’s executive director in DR Congo, explained that the decision was made after insurgent militant groups recently advanced westward toward the mine’s location. The rebels occupied the towns of Nyabiondo on March 9, 2025, the capital of the Osso-Banyungu sector located 110 kilometers northwest of Goma, followed by Kashebere, a further 13 kilometers west of Nyabiondo on March 12, 2025.

According to the statement, all operational mining personnel are being evacuated from the mine site, with only essential personnel remaining for the care, maintenance, and security of the property. “ The safety of the Company’s employees and contractors remains its top priority and cannot be assured at the present time. All operational mining personnel are being evacuated from the mine site, with only essential personnel to remain for the care, maintenance, and security of the property,” the statement reads.

Hundreds of workers were also seen fleeing the Bisiye site, located 60 kilometers from the center of Walikale and 32 kilometers from the national road linking Walikale to Kisangani. Both the DR Congo government and M23 rebels have yet to react to the suspension of the company’s mining activities.
