Augustine Turyamureba, 50, a photographer and resident of Kichope village, Ruguse parish, in Bugambe sub-county, Kikuube district, has been brutally killed following a suspected land dispute.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when a group of about ten unidentified men reportedly raided Kisiita village in three vehicles around 9 p.m. The group is suspected to have been attempting to survey or fence off a contested 10-acre piece of family land.
According to eyewitness accounts, Turyamureba approached the group to question their presence on the land. The group allegedly turned violent and hacked him on the head, face, and neck, leaving him unconscious. Despite sounding an alarm that drew residents to the scene, Turyamureba was later pronounced dead at EDPA Medical Center in Hoima City, where he had been rushed for treatment. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault.
Gabriel Katabazi, the deceased’s brother, confirmed that Turyamureba had gone to check on intruders suspected of encroaching on their family land when he was attacked. Eddy Isingoma, the area LC1 Chairperson, described the community’s shock and grief upon learning of the murder, urging police to swiftly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Christopher Nkalu, the LC5 Councilor for Bugambe sub-county and District Council Speaker, revealed that the family has been involved in a land conflict since 2024. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, noting that a manhunt for the suspects is underway. He appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies by sharing any helpful information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
