Uganda Men’s National Basketball team, Silverbacks will be heading to the second window of the Afro Basket qualifiers slated for 15th June 2021.

The team is set to play two games against Morocco and later face off with Cape Verde. However, the Silverbacks will be targeting one win to secure their position at the Afro Basket finals slated for August 24-September 5 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Hudson Ssegamwenge, the FUBA Vice President for Administration told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that the team will earn automatic qualification if they defeat Morocco in the first game. He made it clear that they will have two trips to Morocco and Cape Verde.

However, Ssegamwenge said the team is yet to start either residential or non-residential training in a bid to shape up early. He said the team will enter residential camp two weeks to the games.

Ssegamwenge said the Federation has put up a team that monitors the performance of the players both local players who are taking part in the National Basketball league and International players. He says the team is closely monitoring Robinson Odoch Opong who is taking part in the ongoing Basketball League Africa where he is featuring for Nigeria’s side Rivers Hoopers.

The administrator however said FUBA is having challenges with facilitation of the team after spending over Shs704m on trips to Egypt and Tunisia in the first and second qualifying windows. The National Council of Sports (NCS) early this year  gave FUBA 370 Million Ugx for a trip to Tunisia. Unfortunately the games in Tunisia were not played after five Ugandan players tested positive for COVID-19.

However, in March, the Federation of International Basketball Associations FIBA, decided that the Group E Afro Basket Qualifying games involving the Silverbacks, Egypt, Morocco and Cape Verde will be played between June 15 and July 15 2021.
