Wakiso Considering Partnership with Private Clinics to Ease Accessibility

Dr. David Ssekabogo, the Wakiso Deputy District Health Officer, notes that given the nature of Wakiso, most health units are distant for residents.
Wakiso District health authorities are considering partnering with private health service providers to ease accessibility to health services in the district.

This stems from the current lock down because of the corona pandemic, which has restricted movements making it difficult for some people to access health services.

Dr. David Ssekabogo, the Wakiso Deputy District Health Officer, notes that given the nature of Wakiso, most health units are distant for residents.

“Our health centers are open and the health workers are available but then the clients cannot make it to the health centers. Besides Wakiso Health Centre IV, which is in a township, the rest have seen a drop in the number of clients received,” Dr. Ssekabogo said.

He says they want to partner with selected clinics provide antenatal care, Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) and Tuberculosis (TB) treatment to residents among other services.

While giving a comprehensive COVID19 update, the Health Minister, Ruth Jane Aceng, said districts have to use all available delivery models to ensure that they supply drugs to their clients.

She noted that where necessary, DHOs may facilitate clients with transport to health centers.

However, Dr. Ssekabogo observes that delivering drugs to clients might be costly since they are already struggling to facilitate the movement of health workers.

He says the option would be to use Village Health Team Members- VHTs but the district has since halted their services fearing that they might become a liability in the fight against corona virus transmission given the fact that they could interact with infected persons.

This will not be the first time the district is partnering with private clinics to deliver services. The district is already coordinating routine immunisation programs where private clinics are key players.  le.
