One person has died and 5 others from the same family in Sembabule District are hospitalized after eating food suspected to have been laced with poison.

The deceased is 4-year-old Sharifa Lukyamuzi, a daughter to Abdul Lukyamuzi, a resident of Nankondo Village in Lwebitakuli Sub County in Sembabule district.

Those struggling for their lives at Bamu Health center are Sheima Lukyamuzi, Abudul Lukyamuzi, Nayiga Sharuwa, all below ten years of age, their father, Abudul Lukyamuzi and mother Sharifa Nakazzi.

They are suspected to have eaten food laced with poison on Sunday night at their home in Nankondo village.

Lukyamuzi says he and his family members started feeling headache and dizzy after eating supper but didn’t take it seriously.

He says the situation worsened in the night forcing them to seek help from a health unit where they were told that they had eaten poisoned food.

Sharifa Nakazzi says they decided to run to the health center when the children started complaining of stomach pains and vomiting before they developed running stomachs.

She says Sharif was pronounced dead on arrival at Bamu health center.

Paul Kangave, the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, says they have taken a sample of the food the suspects ate for testing.
