The remains of more than 120 people who died in camp and were buried in Zone C in Pabbo camp in Amuru, have been exhumed in an emotional camp-phase out ceremony.

The ceremony symbolized the closure of 10 camps in Kilak County including Pabbo, which was the biggest IDP camp in northern Uganda with 65, 000 people.

Relatives were overwhelmed by emotion, as they picked the skeletons of their loved ones for reburial in their ancestral homes.

JICA, a Japanese government development arm, working in Acholi provided the goats and sheep, whose blood was spilled in cleansing rituals during the ceremony.

JICA plans to construct a community Centre and Staff houses at the site.

But relatives of the deceased complained that they were too poor to accord their departed loved ones a decent burial back home.

Vanno Noupech, UNHCR Head of Gulu Sub Office, whose organization facilitated the phase out exercise, said the local government and the cultural institution should facilitate the reburials.

Noupech pointed out that 9,330 out of 65,000 people who used to live in Pabbo IDP camp have not yet returned.

Edward Yakobo Komakech, the Amuru RDC, asked those still in the camps to leave by March, to benefit from government programs being implemented in the villages.

The IDP camps closed today included Pabo, Amuru, Awer, Lacor, Keyo, Pawel-Langata, Atyak, Guru-Guru, Parabongo and Pagak among others.
