147 Suspected Criminals Arrested in Gulu Crackdown

A total of 147 suspected criminals have been arrested in a joint intelligence-led crackdown in Gulu. They include 140 male suspects and seven female sex workers picked by police and the army in hotspots within the city from between 5 pm and midnight.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson told URN in an interview that the suspects were arrested in connection with criminal acts ranging from the theft of phones and handbags, motorcycle theft, robbery, rape, and smoking opium.

Others, according to Mudong, include those who violated COVID -19 Standard operating procedures, suspects who escaped from detention, those who evaded arrest as well as those who obstructed security officers from carrying out their lawful duties.

This morning, the suspects aged between 16 and 35 were paraded at Police Primary School in Pece –Laroo Division, from where they were still undergoing screening by this afternoon. Mudong adds that police is considering a number of charges, ranging from robbery, burglary, and violation of COVID -19 SOPS among others.

Hassan Kato, the UPDF 4th Division Spokesperson says the majority of the suspects are young people under the care of parents or guardians and advised that police should start charging such parents foe negligence.

Walter Tootika, a resident of Cuk –pa –Atuku in Pece –Laroo Division hailed the security for the operation saying the fear-stricken residents of Gulu City would live in peace if the suspects are charged, tried in the courts of law, and convicted. He added that such operations must be conducted regularly.
