16-Year-Old Pleads with Parents over Girl Child Education

The teenager who dreams of becoming a nurse is angered with parents that undermine girl child education. She further pleads with the courts of laws to never exercise leniency to teachers that defile their students.

A 16 year old school girl in Pader District has petitioned parents and teachers to attach extra values to girl child education.

Akech Stella Mercy, a senior three student in Rackoko Comprehensive Secondary School says many of her village friends were forced to abandon school for early marriage while others dropped out of school under the weight of pressure from their teachers demanding for sex.

Okello Francis, a pader based teacher says few parents in post conflict districts in Northern Uganda; attach value the education of their children.  Girls also stray off the education path by both peer pressure and men.

As a result the dropout rate continues to rise alongside illiteracy levels in the region.

Meanwhile, a mobile phone surveillance system has been set up to coordinate the return of girls that came from home for preps in schools. The system ensures that the girls reach home safely and on schedules, Yonah Francis Odida, an educationalist in Pader reveals.

Otim Douglas, a Science Teacher in Pader observes a need for talking compounds that educate school children on sex, peace and conflicts. He says these initiatives prepare girls for social life after school.
