A 17-Year-Old boy has committed suicide in Bukedea District.
John Emaat, 17, resident of Tukum Village in Kangole Sub County in Bukedea
district took poison when his uncle, John Omoding frustrated his plan to have
his mother, Betty Atome returns home to look after the family. He was rushed to
Bukedea HCIV but died on Friday.
Emaat has been looking after his young brothers and sisters after they were abandoned
by their parents.
According to Josephine Akol, the area councillor for Koreng Parish, the couple acquired
a loan of 600,000 Shillings from BRAC to start a business.
She explains that when Atome, the mother of the children learnt
that her husband was not sending the money as earlier agreed for servicing the
loan, she followed him to Serere but was shocked to find that he was living with
another woman.
According to Akol, Atome decided to abandon the home for fear of
being arrested for failing to pay the loan. Emaat was forced to assume responsibility for
taking care of his siblings.
However, Emaat wanted his mother to return home and he decided to
rent out a piece of land at 300,000 Shillings to service the loan.
It is alleged that when Omoding got to know of Emaat’s plans, he
blocked him from using the land, which angered the deceased forcing him to
drink poison.
