The East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman, Oscar Gregg Ageca says they have opened a general inquiry file GEF 13/2021, to investigate circumstances under which the consignment of 79 boxes containing 1,896 hoes went missing from Soroti Council Stores. The hoes are valued at UGX. 18,960,000.

The Police in Soroti have arrested eight officials from Soroti City over the alleged theft of 1,896 hand hoes from the National Agricultural Advisory Authority -NAADS meant for peasant farmers.

The officers, whose identities have been concealed so as not to jeopardize investigations into the matter are all employees of Soroti City.

“The scene has been visited by CID from Soroti; suspects' statements recorded and 14 suspects were arrested and are currently detained at Soroti CPS to help with investigations”, reads police press release issued on Thursday.

Ageca says the alleged theft of the hoes took place between 10th and 18th, June, 2021.

The distribution of hoes that started early in June has been marred with allegations of theft in other districts of Teso. In Serere district, some households allegedly missed the hoses while others were given just a hoe per household.

Nobert Ikwarit, the sub county chairperson of Pingire Sub County says 29 boxes containing 696 hoes went missing mysteriously in the stores. Ikwarit says over 350 households in his sub county have since missed out on the hoes distribution.

“We have mounted a search involving the Police personnel but without any success," Ikwarit said. "What is baffling is the way boxes went missing from the store without any break- ins. However, since the police says they are investigating, I want to give them a chance to bring justice to my people who have missed the hoes.”

The Government started a countrywide distribution of 2.5 million hand hoes across the country to vulnerable small-holder farmers. The move is aimed at empowering vulnerable rural farmers to engage in meaningful agriculture.

The distribution of hand hoes is in fulfillment of President Yoweri Museveni's campaign pledge of 2016 general elections.
