More than 300 first year male students from the engineering faculty in Ndejje University in Luweero district have been suspended for striking. On Tuesday evening, students ganged up and besieged the Dean of Students, Wilfred Kato Muhumuuza threatening to beat him while protesting the proposed tuition increment in the next academic year.

They also vandalized the toilet at Noah's Ark Hostel and the windowpane in the Estates office. The students rampaged after the university announced a proposed 10 percent tuition increment across all courses, an increase of the accommodation and meals fees from Shillings 650,000 to 800,000 and introduction of digital registration fees of Shillings 40,000 among others.

This afternoon, the university management convened a crisis meeting chaired by the Deputy Vice chancellor, Dr. Fredrick Kakembo. The meeting resolved to suspend engineering students for allegedly inciting others to strike with intentions of vandalising university property. Shortly after the meeting, Dr. Kakembo gave the students two hours to vacate their halls of residence.

He however, didn't indicate when the students will return for examinations, which are scheduled to start on Monday next week. Kakembo has ordered all continuing students to present their residential cards at all security check points when they intend to access their halls.
