Police in Arua district have arrested a 38-year-old man, Richard Abindu, for allegedly defiling a 4-year-old girl.
It is reported that Abindu, a resident of Ayiniva Village took advantage of the absence of the victim's mother to lure the juvenile to his room and defiled her. Upon returning home, the mother heard her daughter crying for help from Abindu's house.
The acting Regional police spokesperson for West Nile, Collins Asea says that residents quickly responded to the alarm raised by Ejeku and found the victim in a vulnerable state. Abindu was subjected to a beating before reporting the matter to the police.
“Police investigations are ongoing, including gathering statements from eyewitnesses to clearly understand the event and ensure that all parties are heard. A formal case of aggravated defilement has been opened”, Asea said in a statement.
According to Asea, the minor is currently undergoing medical examinations at Arua Regional Referral Hospital while the suspect is being treated for injuries inflicted by the mob.
According to the police Annual Crime Report 2023, 3,846 cases of Aggravated Defilement were reported to Police in 2023, compared to 3,620 cases reported in 2022, indicating a 6.2% increase.
Last year, in the West Nile region alone a total of 153 cases of Aggravated Defilement were registered according to statistics obtained from police.
