40 Hospitalized After Suspected Food Poisoning

40 people in Isingiro district are hospitalised at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after eating meat laced with poison.

The affected people developed running stomachs and started vomiting after eating the meat they reportedly bought from a butcher in Katembe Parish in Kabingo Sub County in Isingiro district early this week.

Dr. Bruhan Kasozi, the Isingiro District Veterinary Officer, suspects the affected people ate meat from a carcass smuggled out of Lake Mburo National park. He says several people in the area eat meat from untrustworthy sources. Medard Kwikiriza, one of the affected residents, says he started vomiting and developed a running stomach hardly after eating the meat.

Celestine Barigye, the Director Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, says their preliminary finding show that patients ate meat laced with poison.

He explains that most of the patients were dehydrated at the time of admission resulting from vomiting. Barigye however, says the patients are out of danger.
