40-year-Old Fisherman Drowns in River Nguse

The deceased has been identified as Edward Basaija a resident of Wabinyama village Rubirizi parish in Mpeefu sub county in Kagadi district.


A 40-year-old fisherman has drowned in river Nguse in Kagadi district.

The deceased has been identified as Edward Basaija a resident of Wabinyama village Rubirizi parish in Mpeefu sub county in Kagadi district.

Basaija reportedly went for fishing at river Nguse on Wednesday evening but he reportedly drowned in the river as he was swept away by the fast-running water that killed him instantly.

Enos Bitarabeho, the LCI Chairperson for Wabinyama village told Uganda Radio Network in an interview on Thursday that the deceased’s relatives waited for him to come home in vain. This prompted area residents to mount a search for him.

The body was on Thursday morning found floating on the river by area residents.

The residents immediately alerted Kagadi police who rushed and joined the residents in retrieving the body.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson has confirmed the incident adding that after the body was retrieved from the river, police conveyed it to Kagadi general hospital mortuary where it is currently lying pending a postmortem. 

In August 2019, a 10-year-old girl and a pupil of Buharura Primary school in Kiryanga sub-county drowned in the same river while swimming with her colleagues. The deceased was identified as Grace Tushabe. She was swept away by running water.  

In December 2019, a pupil of Zahura Primary school in Kagadi district drowned in River Nguse. 

13-year-old Sulaiman Nizeimana drowned in River Nguse around 7:30pm while trying to cross together with his young brother, Ismail Champion. She was swept away by running water.
