400 people in three
villages in Rakai district face eviction.
The affected residents are from the villages of; Kyandaaza, Kigeye and
Kateerero located in Byakabanda Sub County.
A Kampala based businessman Enoch Rwamirembe is threatening to
evict them off the land they have occupied for decades. Rwamirembe claims ownership
of the land measuring 1.6 square miles which he says he bought from the family
of the late Asuman Matero; one of the famous mailo Landowners in the area.
Baker Kiwanuka, the Byakabanda Sub County Chairperson says that
the land dispute has dragged on since 2014 when Rwamirembe first showed up to
claim ownership of the land.
He says that Rwamirembe recently secured an interim court order
granting him permission to open boundaries of the said land and eventually
Kiwanuka says despite being unknown in the area, the land claimant
is now threatening to evict the residents causing tension in the area.

Edith Nalwoga, one of the affected persons says they have occupied
the land since 1949, and have been paying rent fees arguing how they can be
evicted without compensation.
Nalwoga aged 68 says, besides their ancestral home and plantations
they also own graveyards of their grandparents on the disputed land insisting
they have nowhere to relocate to.
Patrick Kanyana, the Chairperson for Kyandaaza Village says that
they have no alternative but to resist eviction.
During a heated meeting with the district security team led
Charles Mubiru, the Rakai Resident District Commissioner, the affected
residents threatened to resort to violence should there be any planned attempts
to open-up boundaries or eviction.
