five-year-old woman is Kiira region police custody for killing her elderly
The suspect is Fatuma Najjuma, a resident of Nakanyonyi-Bukwale
village in Bugembe town council in Jinja district.
She was arrested on Friday ganging up with her
boyfriend only identified as Bashir to strangle her 75-year-old mother, Sophia
Nakayenga to death on Tuesday night.
The suspects reportedly laid the deceased’s
body on a mattress and covered it with a blanket before setting the house
ablaze to destroy evidence.
The suspects fled the scene after committing the crime but
Nakayenga’s neighbor managed to put out the fire only to find wounds and
visible traces of blood around her neck.
The deceased’s body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for
postmortem, which revealed that she was strangled before the house was torched.
Police later confirmed that the fire was
deliberately started since the house lacked power and there was no source of
Joel Ntuyo, the Nakanyonyi-Bukwale Village chairperson, says the suspects
wanted to fraudulently selloff the deceased’s plot of land.
“The deceased had a 100 by 100ft piece of land
but these two had tried to sell it off claiming that there were plans of
relocating their deceased mother to a better place but after thorough inquiries
we realized that it was a lie. We held several meeting involving different
stakeholders and the matter was handed over to police but I am surprised at
their action,” he said.
