A forty five-year-old woman is Kiira region police custody for killing her elderly mother.

The suspect is Fatuma Najjuma, a resident of Nakanyonyi-Bukwale village in Bugembe town council in Jinja district.

She was arrested on Friday ganging up with her boyfriend only identified as Bashir to strangle her 75-year-old mother, Sophia Nakayenga to death on Tuesday night.

The suspects reportedly laid the deceased’s body on a mattress and covered it with a blanket before setting the house ablaze to destroy evidence.

The suspects fled the scene after committing the crime but Nakayenga’s neighbor managed to put out the fire only to find wounds and visible traces of blood around her neck.

The deceased’s body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem, which revealed that she was strangled before the house was torched.

Police later confirmed that the fire was deliberately started since the house lacked power and there was no source of fire.

Joel Ntuyo, the Nakanyonyi-Bukwale Village chairperson, says the suspects wanted to fraudulently selloff the deceased’s plot of land.

“The deceased had a 100 by 100ft piece of land but these two had tried to sell it off claiming that there were plans of relocating their deceased mother to a better place but after thorough inquiries we realized that it was a lie. We held several meeting involving different stakeholders and the matter was handed over to police but I am surprised at their action,” he said.

Abby Ngako, the Kiira Region Police Spokesperson Najjuma is locked up at Jinja central police station following her arrest from Bugembe town council.
