Joyce Oroma, the Kwania District Water Officer has urged the beneficiaries to maintain the boreholes so as to continue accessing safe water.

“I want to implore the community to take advantage of clean and safe water to bring up healthy families, they should maintain the water sources and avoid vandalizing it,” she said in an interview.

Oroma said water coverage in the district stands at 78%. She said there is improvement of sanitation in the district to 81% while handwashing with soap after visiting the toilet remains at a paltry 32%.

She said with the population of 381,000 people, the district still has a long way to go to ensure that access to clean and safe water reaches everybody.

Kwania District LC 5 Chairperson, Bazil Okello Onac warns water committee officials against embezzling funds collected by communities for borehole maintenance.

Residents who talked to Uganda Radio Network-URN welcomed the repair of the boreholes and sinking of new ones.

David Ojule, Shara Okello and Justine Adongo, say the new boreholes are near their homes compared to the past where they used to move a distance of about 4km to collect water.
