83-year-old William Mukaira, the Bushenyi district Forum for Democratic Change chairman, today appeared before the Buganda Road court Grade One Magistrate on charges of murder.

Grade One Magistrate John Patrick Wekesa barred Mukaira, a director of Valley College in Bushenyi, from taking any plea and remanded him to Luzira prison until the 20th of July.

State attorney Jane Kajuga told court that on the 25th of May 2011 in Bushenyi district, Mukaira caused the death of Col. Edison Muzoora, a former UPDF soldier who deserted the force in 2003 and allegedly joined the People’s Redemption Army (PRA).

Mukaira is the first suspect to be charged in relation to Col. Muzoora’s death. Seven people including Mukaira were arrested last month in connection with the same case.

Two of the suspects were charged with treason, while four were charged with concealment of treason.  These included Dr. Aggrey Byamukama, a senior FDC official in Mbarara, Didas Atunga-Bantu alias Colonel Iddi Kibwama Bendera, Boniface Mumbere Kinyambila alias Ivan Musinguzi and others still at large.

The state alleges that between October 2006 and May 2011 they plotted to overthrow the Government by force of arms.

The charge sheet initially had murder charges, but was amended to treason.

The suspects were arrested on different occasions after the body of Col. Muzoora, who was believed to be in exile, was found dumped at his home in Bushenyi district last month.
