86-Year-old Man Commits Suicide by Hanging

He suspects the deceased could have committed suicide due to frustration since he was staying alone in his house and had no one to take appropriate care of him.

Police in Kibaale are investigating circumstances under which an 86-year-old man committed suicide by hanging inside his house.  

The deceased has been identified as Erifazi Byakatonda, a resident of Babigaya village in Kabasekende sub county in Kibaale district.  

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says the deceased was last seen over the weekend on Saturday while in good health.

However, area residents became suspicious on Monday morning after he failed to open the door to his house the whole of Sunday.

This prompted the residents to alert the area LC1 officials who later alerted the police. He says police together with the area residents forced their way into the house only to find Byakatonda’s body dangling.He had used a rope to end his life.

He suspects the deceased could have committed suicide due to frustration since he was staying alone in his house and had no one to take appropriate care of him.  

He says the deceased used to counsel both the young and the elderly people on how to happily associate and live with friends.   

Cases of suspected suicides are not new in the Albertine sub region.   

In May 2021, a suspect allegedly committed suicide at Isunga Central Police Station cells in Kagadi district.

The suspect was identified as Geoffrey Matala, a mechanic and a resident of Kisegya village in Isunga sub-county of Kagadi district. 

     

Matala had been arrested for allegedly stealing a motorcycle.   He was found dangling in the police cells after he used a piece of blanket to commit suicide. 

 

At the time of the incident, there were five suspects in the cells, however it is not clear how he committed suicide in the presence of the suspects.

    

On June 3,2021, a prominent driver in Hoima City committed suicide by hanging.  

The deceased driver was identified as Issa Mugisa 40, a resident of Bwikya ward Hoima East Division Hoima City at the same time a driver operating at Kinubi stage in the same division Hoima City.  

His lifeless body was found hanging in an incomplete house near his home after area residents and police mounted a search for him following his disappearance from home.
