The Apac District Director of Health Services, Dr. Matthew Emer, says over 9% of the total population in Apac is HIV positive, making it one of the districts with the highest HIV prevalence in the country.
Dr. Emer blames the high incidence of HIV and AIDS on the resistance to safe sex practices and prostitution. He says the insurgency in northern Uganda has also increased the number of internally displaced people living in Apac, straining the few AIDS awareness and medical services.
Voluntary HIV testing and counseling services have been opened in both Aber and Apac Hospitals. Dr. Emer say more than 400 people are enrolled for anti-retroviral treatment at the two facilities.
