A dark mood covered the colourful retirement ceremony organised by the Inspector General of Police to see off at least 12 of the force's most senior officers who are heading into retirement.
Earlier information indicated that all the 12 Assistant Inspector Generals of Police -AIGPs and two Senior Commissioners of Police -SCPs were to grace the function which was to start at 9am.
But at least nine of the most senior police officers were a no-show, leaving the IGP to preside over a rather hollow function after the organizers of the event had waited for an extra nearly three hours for arrival of the retiring officers in vain.
By the time the event started at a half past 11am, only one AIGP Moses Balimwoyo was present while his former colleagues whose names appeared on the list never showed up.
The AIGPs who did not show up but were on the list include Grace Turyagumanawe who retired as director peace support operations, Asuman Mugenyi who retired as director police operations, Godfrey Bangirana who was forced out office after defying Ochola order to leave when his contract expired and he was director logistics and engineering, Steven Kasiima who director traffic Police and Lemmy Twinomogisha who was director welfare and production.
Not only AIGPs shunned the event, but Commissioners of Police -CPs and Assistant Commissioners of Police -ACPs also stayed away. The Commissioners who were a no show include CP Henry Tumwesigye, ACP Kaggwa Kaleebi, ACP Kisubi Hakeem and ACP Musoke Stephen.
The director of Police human resource AIGP Jesse Kamunanwire, kept reading names of the AIGPs, CPs and ACPs to be awarded with certificates but they had not even bothered to send representatives.
Many top police officers were forced to leave the force after waiting for 12 to 18 months for renewal of their contracts by president Yoweri Museveni but in vain.
But in his speech, AIGP Kamunanwire reminded retirees to approach their area Local Council chairpersons to help them integrate with the communities where they will be seen and treated as ordinary residents.
Kamunanwire explained that retirement doesn't come as an accident meaning the retirees should have expected it from the day they joined police up to the time they're retiring.
But in addition, retirees who also included Senior Superintendents of Police -SSPs, Superintendents of Police SPs and Assistant Superintendents of Police -ASPs were urged to continue serving police as volunteers.

Bua also cautioned the officers who were 49 in number to understand that they'll be avoided by their friends because they're now of less help since they're no longer earning or wearing the powerful police uniform.
They were also cautioned against spending on business ideas they have knowledge about. Spending wisely and only when necessary, was a other point Bua emphasized.
