A Family of 10 Homeless As Mob Demolishes Home, Torches Property

The mob raided the family of David Odoi, a resident of Liwira village in Sere Sub-county on Saturday last week accusing him of poisoning Dominic Owori, who is reportedly unconscious during a drinking spree.

A family of 10 members in Tororo district is homeless following the destruction of their home in a mob attack. The mob raided the family of David Odoi, a resident of Liwira village in Sere Sub-county on Saturday last week accusing him of poisoning Dominic Owori, who is reportedly unconscious during a drinking spree.

They torched property worth millions of Shillings including 15 new iron sheets, 5 bags of dry cassava, 2 bags of rice, 1 bag of sorghum, 3 beds and 6 mattresses, 10 saucepans, 2 bicycles and academic documents among many others.

Odoi’s wife, Mary Akello says that the angry mob members stormed her home around 10 am as he was returning from the garden and started asking for her husband. Akello says that she tried to lie that her husband was away from home but the mob members picked hoes, started demolishing her house and torched property.

According to Akello, she is now homeless and surviving on the sympathy of well-wishers.

James Odong, Teddy Aketch and Oketch Obbo Tereka, all residents of the area, say the mob attack was the handwork of some few residents. He says that they stayed away from the mob action, saying they could not act on mere allegations.

Godfrey Obbo, the Liwira village LC 1 chairman says that he was unable to contain the angry mob members because they couldn't listen to his advice. He says that he tried to rescue the victim’s property but the mob overpowered him. Obbo says that they have filed a case at police to come on the ground and investigate the matter.

Damascus Okoth, the OC Paya police station in Paya Sub-county condemned mob justice, saying that they have commenced investigations to find the perpetrators.
