Uganda's national Basketball team, Silverbacks’ preparations for the Afro Basket qualifiers is facing financial challenges.

The team is set to play away games against Morocco and Cape Verde. However, the Silverbacks will qualify if they win the first game against Morocco to secure their position at the Afro Basket finals slated for August 24-September 5 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Uganda's games were supposed to be played in February where the second window of the qualifiers was organized in Tunisia. However, after several Uganda team members tested positive for COVID-19, the International Basketball governing body postponed Uganda’s fixtures.

According to FIBA, Uganda's Group E games against Morocco and Cape Verde in Group E of the qualifiers are now meant to be played between June 15th and and 15th July.

But the President of the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA), Nasser Sserunjoji says they need financial support to be able to prepare and play the two games and also participate in the tournament in Kigali. Sserunjoji told Uganda Radio Network (URN) said the Silverbacks team needs about uganda shilling 370 million to prepare and also make the two trips.

Sserunjoji said that the team should have been in camp to prepare for the games, however they cannot because of lack of funds.

Sserunjoji said they earlier submitted their budgets to the National Council of Sports (NCS) who he says are yet to give a positive response.

This comes at a time when the NCS General Secretary, Bernard Ogwel recently asked  sports Federation to look for alternative funding.

Ogwel told URN that the NCS runs on a budget of 18 billion with the Football body taking 10 billion and the remaining bodies share 8 billion. Ogwel says the government has also shifted it's focus to the Tokyo Olympics.

During the last attempt by Silverbacks to play in the second window of the Afro basket qualifiers which took place in Tunisia FUBA spend uganda shillings 370 million.

Meanwhile, the women’s senior team, the Gazelles is also in preparing to take part in the  Afro Basket qualifiers set for July 12-17 in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.
