Residents of Ntungamo municipality are living in fear of disease outbreak due to the appalling sanitation. They accuse the municipality of failing to open up drainage channels and clearing decomposing piles of garbage in the municipality. The most affected areas include park ward and Eastern division, all in Ntungamo municipality.

Obed Tayebwa, a fresh milk vendor along old Kabale -Mbarara road says uncontrolled sewage from commercial buildings is left to flow in corridors and open drainage during the day. He says the heavy stench from the sewage has forced several of his customers to abandon his milk fearing it could be contaminated.

Juliet Mpamize, a shop and hotel owner in Ntungamo town says that they have been appealing to the authorities to address the appalling sanitation since April 2013 in vain.

Mpamize says the situation has been worsened by the water crisis because many residents are reluctant to use the available water to clear the sewage. Ntungamo municipality has been without running water for over three months since the main water server at Kahunga 5kilomtres from Ntungamo town was destroyed by RCC Construction Company during the construction of Mbarara -Kabale road.

Darlison Barugahare, the councilor representing Ntungamo municipality has no kind words for the residents. He accuses them of littering the town instead of taking garbage to the designated garbage dumping sites. Barugahare says it is the individual’s responsibility of every resident to clean his or her premise instead of waiting for council.

Hussein Ssemuga, the acting town clerk Ntungamo municipality admits that the divisions have not been collecting garbage from town for some time because of the tedious tendering system. Ssemuga says the situation worsened after they terminated the services of private contractors who were collecting garbage and opening the drainage system around the town.

Ssemuga says they have no option but to use the recently acquired trucks to collect the garbage and recruit porters to open the blocked drainage systems.  Ntungamo municipality has a population of 52.000 people.
