Prof. Nawangwe says; Dismissed staff all have the right to appeal against the Appointments Board decisions through proper channels. We should all join hands and stamp indiscipline and impunity out of Makerere University.
Makerere VC: Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe
The Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has defended the sacking of more than 45 members of staff citing.
The defense is contained in his communication to staff on Sunday while commenting on mass sacking that has sent shivers among staff at the University.
In his communication to staff, Prof. Nawangwe announced that the process of appointing members of the 12th Council of Makerere University ended on Thursday 20th December 2018 with the election of members representing the public.
He further said that Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the Ruhinda North legislator, and former controversial Chairperson of the Appointments Board, Bruce Kabaasa “were properly nominated and elected the members of Council representing the public.”
According to the Vice Chancellor, “it was unacceptable” for a section of the Makerere University community to continue contesting the election of some of the Council members.
He warned that; “Continued maligning of the representatives of the public on Council while hiding behind the cover of associations is gross misconduct and it tarnishes the image of our University. This will not be tolerated.”
On the dismissed Staff, Prof. Nawangwe said that the majority of those dismissed were people who absconded from duty, some as far back as 2010 citing that the Appointments Board was “merely clearing a backlog of disciplinary cases.”
“All the cases were properly handled in accordance with the law and all those affected were given the opportunity for a fair hearing. There were also recent cases of indiscipline, including sexual harassment, assault, insubordination and failure to perform duties among others,” said the Vice Chancellor.
Adding that; “They all have the right to appeal against the Appointments Board decisions through proper channels. We should all join hands and stamp indiscipline and impunity out of Makerere University.”
The number of senior staff at Makerere University has also risen to 47. Among the reasons for the action, the university says majority had absconded, incompetent and inefficient, insubordination, assault, sexual harassment as well as soliciting of bribes.
It should be noted that the outgoing Eng. Dr. Charles Wana –Etyem led Council was running a four -year term since 2015. It is not clear why the decision to massively sack was rushed as its term of office had come to an end.
