Arwotcek HCII in Amolatar district is faced with a shortage of delivery beds leaving expectant mothers to deliver on the floor.

The facility has only one delivery bed which is broken forcing most expectant mothers to deliver on the floor due to lack of beds.

Last week, a mother almost lost her baby during birth because the delivery bed was in use by another mother. She delivered her 3kg baby on the floor.

Jacinta Akullo, an expectant mother, says that their lives are at risk because they sleep on the floor as they wait for delivery. She wants the government to intervene and improve the health sector.

According to Akullo says that expectant women are forced to seek the services of Traditional Birth Services or trek long distances to Health Centre IIIs offering maternal services.

Eunice Auma, the in-charge Arwotcek HCII says there is a need to upgrade the facility to Health Centre III. She adds that the facility needs more than 10 delivery beds due to the high deliveries.  The facility handles more than six deliveries every day.

According to Auma, the facility is serving a very high population thus the need to improve its infrastructures and staffing.

Translation; “Arwotcek as an HCII should be offering simple services like giving treatment in the OPD but at our level, we are offering other services such as malaria testing and treatment, HIV counselling and testing, family planning services but the biggest of all is the service we give to our mother in the maternity.” She said.

Simon Aliga, the District Health Officer, said the facility is among those that will be elevated to HCIII this financial year 2021/2022.
