The Banyakigezi under the International Community of Banyakigezi (ICOB) have called of their annual convention for this year.

This has been revealed by the president of the International Community of Banyakigezi, Ruth Ndyabahika. He says they decided to call off the convection that brings together people from the Kigezi region and those living  in the Diaspora, for fear that it would be hijacked and turned into a political field by political candidates ate various levels.

“A convention in December would have been hijacked and instead turned into a political field, going out of our control so we have postponed to after elections,” she said.

The decision to call off the convention has not been welcomed by some Banyakigezi who believe that the election season should not have warranted the call off.

Robert Byamugisha Kakuru a member of the Banyakigezi community told Uganda Radio Network that decision was unfair, and that members were not consulted.

Fulgence Turyatemba is a member of the Banyankigezi community who looked forward to the convention this year.

Two presidential candidates, John Patrick Amama Mbabazi and Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye come from the Kigezi districts of Kanungu and Rukungiri respectively.
The event was supposed to usher the Banyakigezi into the new year, under the theme “Taking ICOB to Kabale Community: Fighting illiteracy and ill-health through Wealth Creation”.

The annual convention is held at the end of every year in the districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro and Rukungiri on rotational basis. Kabale district was set to host this year\'s event.

This is not the first time that the international convention is called off citing similar reasons. In 2011, the Banyakigezi called off the convention after rumours started spreading that the community was clandestinely mobilizing resources and votes for one of its members, Rtd.Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye.
