Tension is mounting in Kasangati where police is engaging crowds in running battles over the detention and trial of former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye.

A number of youth carrying placards calling for Besigye's release sauntered to Kasangati court as he was arraigned to answer charges of disobeying lawful orders this morning. The crowds however started swelling moments later, staging a series of demonstrations in the area.

They were later joined by Ingrid Turinawe, the national coordinator of FDC defiance campaign, whose vehicle has now been towed by police.

Dr Besigye, who is currently in Luzira prison appeared before Grade One Magistrate Egesa for further hearing of the case.

The Charge stems from an incident on April 5 in Mulago, a suburb of Kampala where Besigye was involved in a standoff with police on his way to Najjanankumbi, the headquarters of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change –FDC Party. He was intercepted at Mulago round about.

On the said day, Besigye disregarded police advice to use Yusuf Lule road on his way to Najjanankumbi opting for the route through Wandegeya to the city centre. But Police maintained that his preferred route would jeopardize business in the city centre.

Details coming up shortly.
