The Organizing Committee for the enthronement of Rt. Rev. Dr. Steven Kazimba Mugalu as the 9th Archbishop of the Church of Uganda has defended the Shillings 1.16 billion budget. Kazimba’s enthronement is slated for 1st March 2020 at St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe.

He will replace Archbishop Stanley Ntagali whose tenure will expire with the enthronement of his successor. Ever since Church of Uganda announced the enthronement budget, some members of the public accused the church of being too extravagant.

In several comments posted on social media and those directed directly to the organizing committee members, concerned members, said the church had a lot of unfunded priorities, saying there is no justification to spend the said amount on a ‘dine and wine function’.

However, the Organizing Committee under the leadership of Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa has come out to defend the budget, saying that it is modest one given the significance of the function, the number of items, programs and projects they would like to spend on.

Addressing journalists at the COU Provincial offices at Namirembe on the progress of the preparations for the function, Nankabirwa noted that some of items are permanent like renovating the Archbishop’s house, the provincial offices and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Cue out…leave there.”//

Nankabirwa also said they intend to use the part of the money to accommodate and facilitate a number of foreign dignitaries for the number of days they spend in the country among other activities.

Cue out…number of people.”//

Nankabirwa notes their original budget was much higher but it was trimmed by the organizing committee after looking at different avenues to improvise the funding.

According to Nankabirwa, they expect to cut down the budget as they continue receiving offers on a number of budgeted items free of charge.

More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the enthronement of the Archbishop.
