Bobi Wine
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, the National Unity Platform-NUP party president has called for an audit of the 2021 presidential election results. Kyagulanyi was reacting to claims by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni last week that he had evidence that NUP had rigged his votes by over a million. In a letter written to President Museveni, Kyagulanyi said instead he had evidence that it was Museveni who rigged the election.
“Our attention has been drawn to the false allegations you made…to the effect that the National Unity Platform rigged up to one million votes in the 2021 presidential election. As you are aware, you, Mr. Museveni, rigged not only the 2021 presidential election but the previous elections as well. While the Supreme Court previously fell short of nullifying those elections, it nevertheless confirmed rigging and other forms of election theft conducted not by the opposition but by you and your agents,” Kyagulanyi’s letter dated September 15 and was received Monday by the office of the president reads in part.
It adds that despite the 2021 election, which was a culmination of a brutal military operation waged against NUP throughout the presidential campaigns, this didn’t stop them from winning the elections. “You have now challenged us to a day in court to disprove your wild allegations. We accept the challenge. This is to request therefore that you; waive your immunity in writing so that we meet in court, and submit to a credible, transparent, and independent audit of the 2021 electoral process, conducted by a reputable international body, preferably the United Nations. We are ready to submit our evidence to prove the amount of rigging which you engaged in, as well as the other crimes you committed against us and our people,” the letter reads.
It adds that should the results of this audit prove that they engaged in any form of election rigging as the president claimed, then they should be prosecuted per the law. “If on the other hand, the audit proves as we know that you robbed us of our victory and usurped the will of the people of Uganda, you must undertake to step down and allow the people of Uganda to be led by a government of their choosing,” the letter reads.
Speaking to reporters at his offices at Makerere Kavule on Monday, Kyagulanyi said, nobody should believe President Museveni because of the lies he has told over the years. “President Museveni said in 2001 that he was going to run for his last term, he also said on national television that he would not contest for the president after 75 years, but now he is 80 years and he still wants to contest. Now when he says we stole his votes, know the kind of man who is talking. But we challenge him to prove that it is him who stole our votes in 2021,” Kyagulanyi said.
