A new wave of cattle thefts has hit Budaka district. Over 50 cattle and 68 goats have been stolen in Budaka within a space of less than one month. Martin Otim, Budaka District police commander says at least four cases involving animal thefts have been recorded at various police posts in the district over the past one week.

Otim explains that two men police believes to have been the masterminds of the animal thefts were arrested last week and charged in Budaka grade one magistrate court. Samuel Mudanga and Bashir Kabiri were intercepted along the Mbale Tirinyi road while transporting stolen cattle to Mbale town.

Otim says police has got information that some of the people stealing animals from Budaka trade them for other merchandise in Mbale. He says that they are now liaising with their counterparts in Mbale to ensure that the racket of cattle thieves is crushed. Otim advises livestock farmers in the district to build permanent structures for their animals saying most animals are targeted because they sleep in the open.
