Domiano Kijaguzo, the Bugangari Sub county Chairperson, says residents armed with stones, machetes and spears ran after the stray buffalo from Bugangari trading Centre with intentions to kill it.
Three people are nursing severe injuries at Nyakibare hospital in Rukungiri district following an attack by a stray buffalo believed to have escaped from Queen Elizabeth National Park in Bwambara Sub County.

Two of the victims have been identified as Kahubire Rwatabire from Katabushera village and Asta Busingye from Nyabitete Parish in Bugangari Sub County. The third victim is a six-year-old boy whose identity hasn't been established.

The trio was attacked by the female buffalo at 08:00AM on Tuesday morning in Katabushera-Kagashe village Bugangari Sub County.

Domiano Kijaguzo, the Bugangari Sub county Chairperson, says residents armed with stones, machetes and spears ran after the stray buffalo from Bugangari trading Centre with intentions to kill it.

He says the Bufallo turned violent at Kagashe village and injured the trio in self-defense. Kijaguzo says that the victims sustained serious injuries in the stomach, chest, arms and legs.

Mohammad Kakesa, an eye witness, says residents later over powered the buffalo when it got tired and couldn't run anymore and killed it at around 09:54am.

Moses Nanoka, the Rukungiri District Police Commander, says by the time police arrived at the scene, residents had slaughter the buffalo and shared its meat.

According to Nanoka, each of the residents made off with between 7-10 kilograms of meat. He faults residents from killing the buffalo, saying that such acts threaten the tourism sector.
