Security Officers Battle Lyavala's Supporters
Business came to a standstill in Bugiri Municipality this afternoon when police stormed the home of Hajji Lyavala Samanya, one of the candidates in the parliamentary race and whisked him off to unknown destination.

Lyavala was picked up as he was planning to attend the campaign rally of his rival, Asuman Basalirwa, the Justice Forum candidate at Busoga University playground along Saza road.

Lyavala, who is also the former Bugiri LC V chairperson, is said to have declared his support for Basalirwa and was expected to announce the decision at the rally and ask his supporters to rally behind him. He lost in the NRM party primaries and decided to run as independent.

Meddie Lyavala, the son to Haji Siraji Lyavala, says the officers who picked up his father are part of the security detail of the National Resistance Movement-NRM party Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba.

Our reporter was unable to independently verify the claim as Lumumba couldn't be reached by the time of filing this story as she was reportedly locked up in a planning meeting ahead of President, Yoweri Museveni's visit to the district to campaign for the NRM candidate, John Francis Oketcho. Museveni is expected in Bugiri on July, 24, 2018.

The Busoga East Region Police spokesperson, James Mubi has denied the arrest of Lyavala. "You are giving me news, i told you in the first place that we don't have Lyavala, Bugiri municipality is big and he is a candidate, may be he is campaigning somewhere," Mubi said when asked the candidate's whereabouts.

The arrest of Lyavala didn't go down well with his who blocked Market road prompting police to disperse them with teargas. The chaos promoted traders along Market Street, Turukundas, and Lyavala Street to close their shops. The Bugiri Municipality MP elections are scheduled for July, 27, 2018. The other candidate is FDC's Eunice Namatende.
