Building Kills Granny, Four Children

A grandmother and her four grandchildren were killed when a building caved in Seguku Cell 4 in Bunamwaaya- Lubowa in Wakiso district this morning.

The building caved in following the early morning down pour, which is believed to have weakened its base. 

Authorities were yet to establish the identities of the deceased, who are said to have occupied the building for more than years, by the time of publishing this story.

Moses Kasajja, an eye witness says the affected building had weakened because of repeating flooding in the area. 

More than 18 storied buildings have so far been constructed in Bunamwaaya wetland. Water floods resident’s homes whenever it rains.

Ben Kiwanuka, the Makindye Ssabagabo Division councilor has asked municipal engineers to immediately evaluate people constructing houses in wetlands whether they have permits from the National Environment Management Authority-NEMA to do so.

The NEMA Managing Director, Tom Okurut, says none of those building in wetlands has authorisation. Police has evacuated the deceased bodies and taken them to Mulago National Referral Hospital for postmortem.
