The Ministry of Education and Sports has completed major renovation works at Bukalasa Agricultural College.

In March 2020 the Ministry of Education and Sports through the Uganda Skills Development Project contracted Vambeco Enterprises Limited at 9.4 billion shillings to carry out major renovation works at Bukalasa Agricultural College and turn it into a Center of Excellence.

On Tuesday, Haile Banteyehun the Managing Director of Vambeco Enterprises Limited handed over the site to the college after completion of the renovation works. The company has renovated the farmhouses, laboratory, and lecture rooms.

They also constructed new structures that include feed mill, broiler unit, and pullet barn, milk processing unit, incinerators and toilet facilities among others.

Banteyehun said the despite the disruption by COVID-19 lockdown, they have been able to complete and hand over the site in time.

David Ruhweza, the Supervising Engineer for the Ministry of Education and Sports says that the newly constructed facilities are ready for use by the college immediately after the handover by the contractor.

He however noted that in the second phase, the Ministry of Education has already hired another contractor to construct a new state of the art library at nine billion shillings.

The Principal of Bukalasa Agricultural College Gelvan Kisolo Lule said the renovation works were a big achievement in the history of the college because they were operating in old-fashioned structures for years.

Kisolo says that the buildings will help them to revamp the college and promote it into the Center of Excellence. He added that the College’s curriculum has been reviewed and the new infrastructure will help the learners to focus on attaining skills to get employment.

Currently, they are 1700 students and the College intends to recruit more learners after getting new infrastructure.

Bukalasa Agricultural College was founded in 1920 as a Cotton Breeding Centre and since then, partly via mergers with other institutes, developed into the current institute that provides agricultural education.

However, the institute has been struggling to operate due to the inadequate and dilapidated buildings.

The new construction has since given Bukalasa Agriculture College a new facelift.

Through the Uganda Skills Development Project, Government intends at turning Uganda Technical Colleges of Lira, Bushenyi, Elgon, and Bukalasa Agriculture College into Centers of Excellence.

They will offer Competence-Based Training for the manufacturing, Construction and Agricultural sectors.
