Bukedea District Announces Livestock Quarantine

The quarantine was announced on Thursday by the Bukedea District Veterinary Officer Dr Francis Ongelech. According to Ongelech, the foot and mouth have been cited in the parishes of Aerere, Akakaat, Kamututr, Acomai and Kocus.

Authorities in Bukedea district have announced quarantine in Kamutur Sub County following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease. 

The quarantine was announced on Thursday by the Bukedea District Veterinary Officer Dr Francis Ongelech.  According to Ongelech, the foot and mouth have been cited in the parishes of Aerere, Akakaat, Kamututr, Acomai and Kocus. 

He said that all livestock markets, slaughter places are closed and movement of livestock, livestock products and by-products to and from and within Kamutur Sub County have been prohibited until further notice.    

Ongelech asked all veterinary staff, local council officials and security personnel to enforce the quarantine restrictions to control the spread of the disease.

Odgar Akankwastsa, Bukedea District Police Commander said that they will beef up security and also step up the patrols within the affected areas to curb the movement of the animals.

Geoffrey Okiswa, the Bukedea Resident District Commissioner says that the veterinary office should sensitize the community about the spread of the disease before it spreads to the entire district. He adds that if the spread is not controlled, it could affect the district which is one of the biggest cattle markets in East Africa.

Meanwhile, the National Drug Authority-NDA has closed 7 facilities that deal in veterinary medicine and agro-chemicals. This was during an operation conducted in the districts of Kapchorwa, Kalaki, Kween, Kaberamaido, Kumi, Bukedea, Serere and Busia.

Tom Makumbi, the Eastern Region NDA manager said that during the operation, the team visited over 64 facilities and found seven operating illegally.
