Bunyoro Business Community Ignorant of National Suppliers Database

However, most individuals in the Albertine region owning businesses are ignorant on how they can get registered on the NSD. They fault the government for not doing enough to sensitize them about the database.

The business community and farmers in the Albertine Graben are ignorant on how to get registered on the National Suppliers Database [NSD] in order to supply goods and services to the oil and gas companies.

Most individuals in the Albertine region own businesses but are ignorant on how they can get registered on the NSD. They fault the government for not doing enough to sensitize them about the database. 

   

Godwin Angaliya, a supplier of local construction materials in Buliisa district says most of the registration is done online yet there have not been any attempts to help most of them get registered on the database.

He says that it could be a move by the government and the oil companies to abandon the services of the local companies in the region.

Moses Byenkya, the Coordinator Hoima district Farmers Association-HODFA says it is not yet late for the government and the oil companies to educate the business community and farmers in the Albertine region about the database.

John Byaruhanga, a model farmer in Buswekera cell Busiisi Division Hoima Municipality says oil companies have completely abandoned foods being supplied by local farmers in Bunyoro sub-region. He wants the government and the oil companies to train farmers on the standards of foods required by the oil companies.

Nathan Kitwe, the Hoima District Council speaker wants the Petroleum Authority of Uganda to extend the registration services to the people of Bunyoro.

Statistics from Petroleum Authority of Uganda show that only 32 local companies from Bunyoro sub-region have been registered on the National Suppliers Database. 

Dr Fred Kabagambe Kalisa, the Senior Presidential Advisor on oil, gas and Mining tasks, says that the Petroleum Authority of Uganda and the Oil Companies should avail timely information to enable local companies know what they can supply.

Kaliisa says joint venture partners Total, Tullow and CNOOC in Uganda’s oil and gas sector plan to announce their final Investment Decision [FID] in three months to come and construction of facilities to start oil production will be intense in the next five years.

He says this will see $20b invested in the oil and gas sector and over 160,000 Jobs of various categories will be available in the Albertine region. He also says that there will be increased demand for food, accommodation, transport and support services among others.

Betty Namubiru, the National Content Manager PAU says for local companies to get registered on the database, they must possess a number of documents including certificate of registration, bankers’ reference, profiles, their shareholders among others.

She says that it will enable PAU and the government to have proper visibility of the companies that are available to improve efficiency in the process of soliciting for companies in the procurement process.

She says the registered local companies can provide services like Hotel and accommodation, transportation of materials, fuel supply, security, camp management and Civil Engineering among others.

Bernadette Plan, the Hoima district local government secretary for social services urged people in Bunyoro sub-region to stop lamenting but rather organize themselves to tap into the opportunities in the oil and gas sector.
