Several hectares of sugarcane plantation have been destroyed by bush fire in Atiak Sugar estate, Amuru district.

The incident comes barely four months after the factory suffered losses of more than 250 acres of sugar cane plantation.

Police in Amuru district released horrific Ariel photos showing scarred sugarcane plantations devastated by the bushfire on Monday afternoon. It is still unclear how much of the plantation has been affected.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region police spokesperson says they used drones to photograph the vast affected acreage of the land.

He says they are investigating the matter under CRB 18/2019. It is the third time; fire is devastating sugar plantation at the factory being set up in the poverty-stricken region.

In 2016, fire gutted 150 acres of sugarcane plantation at the factory, causing an estimated 150 Million shillings loss. Another incident in November left more than 250 acres of sugar burnt down.

The factory faces land wrangles with some landowners in Gem village, Pachilo Parish in Atiak Sub County in Amuru district. For more than 10 years, residents of Amuru district opposed the establishment of sugarcane plantation in areas of Lakang and Kololo in Amuru district by the Madhvani Group of Companies over land.
