Business along Kakungulu road in Kaberamaido district is paralyzed after running water washed away a key bridge that links Kaberamaido to neighboring districts.

Kakungulu road is the main link for traders from Anyara Sub County in Kaberamaido district to different business hubs. It meanders through Kaberamaido town joins the tarmac to Otuboi through Lwala and Namasale landing site across Lake Kyoga to Nakasongola district. The same road it connects Kaberamaido, on the eastern side to Amuria, Moroto and Kotido.

But the road built in 1922 is now impassable and its lone bridge has broken down. Smallholder farmers can no longer move to markets connecting the communities of Anyara, Akeriau and Orungo sub-counties.

Pius Engwau, a resident of Otule village in Anyara Sub County faults the area leaders for failing to direct funding towards the construction of the road, over the years. Engwau says government intervention is needed to save the road from further ruin.

Engwau says Nakasongola district is one of their most important hubs for cattle transactions when Kakungulu road is operational.

Anyara Sub County Chairperson Michael Okello says that Kaberamaido district local government had no budget allocation for the construction of the road because it was not yet planned. Okello said that the need for fixing the road came as an emergency which has taken the authorities unaware.

He said Anyara Sub County council is lobbying Kaberamaido and Amuria districts neighbouring each other to take up and own Kakungulu road as a district road for easy maintenance and relieve the community from further contribution.

Paul Edotu, Akeriau Sub County chief told Uganda Radio Network in a phone interview that the broken bridge on Kakungulu road shall be constructed using some meagre resources.

Edotu further confirmed that Kakungulu road is worthy rehabilitating because it also leads to some local tourists attraction sites in Amuria like Moru- Inera (talking rocks), Ateuso (shaped rocks), Kidepo Game Park and other business hubs.
