The State House Anti-corruption unit has arrested businessman Abid Alam, over the unlawful eviction of residents in Bukompe, Kassanda district over the weekend.   

Reports indicate that a group of people employed by Abid Alam attacked homes and a farm at Bukompe village razing all plantations and demolishing houses. The head of the State House Anti Corruption Unit Lt Col Edith Nakalema said the eviction was followed by disturbing pictures of rape, and destruction of property among others.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke  Owoyesigire says the businessman who was arrested today, together with one other person, face charges of malicious damage, rape and assault. According to Owoyesigire, Abid Alam is now before the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) recording statements.

Abid Alam has been embroiled in a bitter land conflict with over 2,500 residents of Bukompe, in Kassanda who were originally resettled in the area from Luwunga Central Forest  Reserve in Kiboga district. The land was sold to the residents, who are members of Kiboga Twegatte Cooperative Society Limited by MP Sam Bitangaro, and two others.    

Bitangaro, together with lawyer Francis Owor Onyango, William Tumwine, an official from the Ministry of Gender and his wife Stella Kakuba were also arrested in January over the same land.
