Charles Egonyu, a renowned cattle trader and
butcher has been killed in Serere district. Egonyu, a resident of Iruko
in Kadungulu Sub County was hacked to death by unknown people around 9:30PM Christmas
Eve on his way home from Iruko Trading Center.
Betty Igitu, the Iruko parish woman councilor Egonyu
had just sold a bull at the center by the time of his attack. She
explained that the situation in the village is tense as residents groan over
the killing of the man she describes as the most peaceful and loving Christian.
"As we talk, prayers have been suspended
because Egonyu has been one the pillars in our Anglican Church in Iruko. He
just wedded in September when Bishop Kosea Odongo commissioned our church. It's
a big loss to us this Christmas", Igitu said.
Umar Mugerwa, the Serere District Police Commander says they
managed to calm the situation at night as residents wanted to turn rowdy. He,
however, noted that no suspect had been apprehended as police launch
investigations.
"We returned from the scene at around
4:00Am after patrolling the villages there the whole night. It's unfortunate
incident this season", he said on phone. However, this morning
angry residents lynched Moses Eidu at Kadungulu Police Station in connection to Egonyu’s death.
Eidu had run to the police station for
protection after learning that residents were baying for his blood. Both Igitu and Mugerwa have confirmed Eidu’s
killing.
