The Kagulu Sub county Health Inspector, Josephine Lyanda ordered the closure of the school this afternoon until the administration puts in a place a latrine for the pupils.
At least 840 pupils of Nsomba Primary School in Kagulu sub county Buyende district are stranded following the closure of their school due to lack of a functional latrine. The Kagulu Sub county Health Inspector, Josephine Lyanda ordered the closure of the school this afternoon until the administration puts in a place a latrine for the pupils.
“We can't allow lives of 840 children to be exposed to a health risk. However, the parents have remained adamant to our reminders to put up a latrine. We decree this school closed over health regulations,” she said at an assembly to disperse the pupils. She explains that the absence of a latrine for the pupils contravenes Public Health Regulations.
The Buyende District Education Officer, Dison Bwire has called on government to come to the rescue of the school to enable the children to attend classes. According to Buyende, the district is financially constrained to come to the aid of the school.
He explains that the latrine at Nsomba primary School collapsed after a heavy down pour. He says although parents resolved to contribute Shillings 2,000/= for the construction of new latrine stances, the money isn't forthcoming.
