In march 2018, President Yoweri Museveni while meeting with the Crime Preventers in Lugogo Kampala as their fate was lying in balance following the replacement of former IGP, Kale Kayihura, said that they were to be part of the UPDF as a reserve force.
The Chief of the Defense forces, General David Muhoozi has called
for unity among asked security agencies if they are to maintain peace and
stability in the country.
Muhoozi made the remarks on Friday while presiding over the launch of the
mobilization and documentation exercise of the Reserve Forces in Kampala.
The exercise is meant to build the reserve force into a fully-fledged service
of the Defense Force and also enhance its capability in maintaining peace and
stability in the country.
He emphasized that the security agencies must understand their mission by
serving the interests of all the people.

The Reserve Force Commander Lt General Charles Otema noted that there has been
a number of challenges in the process of transiting the crime preventers into
the reserve forces.
Otema says that it has been difficult to give support to the disbanded crime
preventers because they did not know their exact number.
During the reign of General Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General
of Police, he said that there were 8 million crime preventers in the country.
In March 2018, President Yoweri Museveni while meeting with the Crime
Preventers said that they will co-opted in the reserve force.
However, Otema states that those legible for the exercise launched include
retired officers, and discharged militants of the Defense Forces and members of
the auxiliary forces like former LDU personnel and crime preventers.

The registration and documentation exercise launched today in the Central
region is the last one, having conducted similar exercises in the rest of the
regions in the country.
